These roasteries build and maintain relationships with trusted, sustainable coffee farms around the globe, sourcing, importing and roasting 80+ grade Arabica coffee for Joe & the Juice.

This means that every cup served at Joe & the Juice is 100% specialty coffee.

One of the reasons to work with local roasters is that we want to ensure we serve you fresh coffee.

Coffee is and must be treated as a fresh product and shall ideally be consumed with 2-12 weeks after it has been roasted.

WHAT IS SPECIALTY COFFEE?

At Joe & The Juice, we only serve specialty coffee – but what does that mean?

In coffee, we differentiate between commercial coffee and specialty coffee. All coffee is graded globally from 0-100 by industry professionals known as “Q Graders.”

Sound a little technical? Don’t worry – we’ll get to the point: Any coffee graded below 80 is considered “commercial coffee,” whereas any coffee graded 80+ is officially recognized as “specialty coffee.”

If you’re new to coffee, this might not mean much to you. But what if we told you that specialty grade coffee only makes up 5% of the global coffee market?

All coffee at Joe & The Juice is officially 80+ grade specialty coffee.

TL;DR: At Joe & The Juice, we only serve the best.

WHAT SPECIES OF COFFEE IS SPECIALTY COFFEE?

There are hundreds of species of coffee, but the vast majority of coffee produced worldwide is one of two species: Arabica and Robusta.

Almost all specialty grade coffee is Arabica – and with good reason. Arabica coffee is generally seen as the superior product. It contains less caffeine than Robusta, but has far more complexity and a lot less bitterness.

If you’re looking for smooth, delicious coffee that’ll still give you a boost, Arabica is the way to go. And yes – all Joe & The Juice coffee is 100% Arabica.

HOW DO WE LIKE OUR ROAST?

Choosing the best coffee beans is one thing – getting the roast right is another.

At Joe & The Juice, our specialty coffee is a medium roast, and we only roast it at local specialty coffee roasteries around the world.

When most people think of coffee, they think of the “classic” bitter taste of a dark roast. It’s how most commercial grade coffee is roasted.

A dark roast, however, loses the original flavor characteristics of the coffee bean – and when you’ve chosen only the best Arabica beans like we have, that’s the last thing you want.

That’s why our coffee is a medium roast. It retains the complex flavors of our high-end specialty grade coffee and strikes that perfect balance between acidity and caramelized sweetness.

Our flavor profile: Dark Chocolate, Cherry, Caramel.

With all our roasters we have defined blends that taste amazing as an espresso and with any drink with milk. It was also important to get a flavour profile that worked well for all the iced coffee drinks we sell in the warmer seasons.

Together with our roasters we have worked and tweaked the recipes where we are getting the absolute best out of dedicated work all the coffee farmers our roasters work with.

JOE & THE JUICE’S COFFEE JOURNEY

In 2022, we kickstarted our project to change and improve our coffee from “commercial” to “speciality grade.”

So why did we make the change?

We haven’t been living under a rock: Old-fashioned, bitter, dark roast coffee is going out of style, and we get why. Put simply, specialty coffee is just better – and at Joe & The Juice, we want to offer our customers the best.

After all, our fresh juice and sandwiches are the best you can find on the high street – our coffee should be, too.
